How to play 5 Families – the ultimate guide!

So you want to start playing the 5 Families card game? This guide is here to help you out!

The goal of the game is to earn the most money by the end of the game. You do this by bidding on properties, collecting rent from your opponents, and trading goods.

To begin, each player is dealt five cards. The player with the highest valued card begins the game and play passes clockwise. On a player's turn they must do one of the following:

1. Play one card from their hand. This can be any card, including a property. If you don't have any cards left in your hand, you must draw two new cards from the deck.

2. Draw one card from the deck and add it to their hand.

3. Bid on a property. This can only be done if you have at least one matching color property in your hand. Properties can only be bid on if they are not currently owned by another player. The minimum bid is $100 or one card from your hand, whichever is greater. The winner of the bid pays the opposing player $300 (or three cards from their hand) and takes control of the property.

4. Collect rent from opponents who own properties that are either adjacent to or share a color with one of yours. The amount of rent you collect is based on how many properties your opponent has in that color group multiplied by the number printed on the card (for example, if you have two green properties and your opponent has four, you would collect $24 – two times $12). If an opponent does not have any properties in that color group, then no rent is collected.

5. Trade goods with other players. There are six different types of goods: cigarettes, food, alcohol, drugs, weapons, and cars. To trade goods, both players must agree to the trade and each must have at least one type of good to offer. The value of each good is as follows: cigarettes ($10), food ($25), alcohol ($50), drugs ($100), weapons ($200), cars ($500). Both players reveal their chosen goods and then swap them accordingly. Any unused goods are discarded into the discard pile.

The game ends when either all players have run out of cards or one player has completed all seven steps of their turn (i..e they have played all 7 cards in their hand). The player with the most money wins!
